Community-Led Clean-Up at Mount Lesung: A Success in Environmental Preservation

Bali Waste Management Training Centre (BWMTC) recently completed a successful clean-up event at Mount Lesung in collaboration with local communities and organisations. The initiative brought together environmental enthusiasts and local residents to tackle the issue of waste in one of Bali’s cherished natural areas.

The event, organized by BWMTC in partnership with the BRASTI and ABIWARA communities, along with Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort, focused on clearing waste from the mountain and promoting environmental awareness. Volunteers hiked through various parts of Mount Lesung, collecting trash and learning about the area’s rich biodiversity and cultural significance.

Participants gathered at Bale Melajah, Danau Tamblingan, where they were transported to the starting point of the hike. The clean-up route covered key areas of Mount Lesung, including Seribupati, Nagaloka, and the summit of the mountain. Along the way, volunteers identified and collected waste, which was later sorted, with recyclable materials sent to Munduk Moding Plantation for upcycling.

In addition to waste collection, the event offered an educational experience, highlighting the importance of preserving Bali’s natural and cultural heritage. Volunteers were introduced to the endemic plants of the region, vital water sources, and local temples within the Mertajati Forest Area.

The organizers emphasized the use of used plastic bags for waste collection, aligning with the event’s mission to minimize environmental impact. Participants were well-prepared with rain gear, personal medications, and other essentials for the hike. A traditional lunch, was provided at the summit, reinforcing the event’s focus on sustainability.

“This clean-up was a powerful reminder of our responsibility to protect the environment,” said Lisa, the event coordinator. “We were thrilled to see such strong community participation and hope this momentum continues in future initiatives.”

The clean-up at Mount Lesung stands as a significant achievement in Bali’s ongoing efforts to address waste management and promote environmental stewardship. It also underscores the importance of community involvement in preserving the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage for future generations.
